Dr. Bi is deeply committed to surgical education at every level — from mentoring the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons to continually expanding his own expertise through ongoing learning and collaboration.

A passion for surgical education

Dr. Bi believes that exceptional patient care is inseparable from exceptional education. Throughout his residency at NYU Langone, he became known for his ability to break down complex surgical techniques into clear, teachable steps — mentoring junior residents in the operating room, cadaver lab, and classroom alike. This dedication was formally recognized in June 2024 when he was awarded the Ralph Lusskin, MD Senior Resident Teaching Award by the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at NYU Langone Health — the highest teaching honor given to a senior resident in the program — along with his wife Dr. Nina Fisher, who currently serves as an Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon at NYU/Bellevue Hospital.

Contributing to national surgical training

AANA Foundations in Arthroscopy — Resident Course
Dr. Bi serves as a faculty instructor for this prestigious hands-on arthroscopy training program at the Orthopaedic Learning Center in Rosemont, IL — guiding residents and fellows through cadaveric shoulder, knee, and hip arthroscopy technique, safety, and clinical decision-making.

AAOS Sports Medicine Assessment Exam
Dr. Bi contributes annually as a question writer for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Sports Medicine self-assessment examination — helping shape the core knowledge base tested across the specialty.

American Orthopaedic Association (AOA)
Dr. Bi attends the AOA annual meeting every year, engaging with national leaders in orthopaedic surgery to stay current on evolving approaches to leadership, education, and surgical training.

Surgical videos & medical illustrations

Dr. Bi is committed to making surgical knowledge accessible beyond the operating room. He has produced over 25 award-winning surgical technique videos featured at AAOS, AOSSM, AANA, and OTA — and published on VuMedi and the Video Journal of Sports Medicine. He is also a skilled medical illustrator, creating original anatomical drawings used in peer-reviewed publications and educational materials.

Dr. Bi understands that being the best educator starts with being a dedicated student. He regularly attends advanced surgical skills courses, cadaveric workshops, and national conferences not only to present his own research, but to learn from colleagues, collaborate across institutions, and bring the latest surgical innovations back to his patients in New York. Whether learning a new arthroscopic distal tibial allograft technique from the originator Dr. Ivan Wong, or attending a course on multiligamentous knee injuries from Dr. Robert LaPrade and Dr. Jorge Chahla, Dr. Bi’s commitment to ongoing learning is central to his philosophy of care — and to the quality of education he delivers to those he trains.

Art, creativity, and medicine

The same eye for detail that makes Dr. Bi a precise surgeon also informs his creative work. An accomplished watercolor painter, he applies artistry to medicine — creating original anatomical illustrations that have appeared in peer-reviewed journals and educational materials. His paintings reflect a deep appreciation for the world around him, and the same careful observation that defines his surgical practice.
